Does The Internet Make Us Dumb?

According to Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing, the Internet is making our generation "dumb." Lessing claims that we live in a framenting culture where "people read nothing and knowing nothing of the world." However, I disagree with this statement. In fact, our generation has more knowledge than ever because of the Internet. Society must accept that the 21st century is a much different culture than the 20th century. We have different means of communication because of the Internet. Before the Internet became popular, we would send letters instead of e-mails and rely on human interaction to find out information. While these means of communication were appropriate at the time, they are no longer necessary. Our society is becoming smarter by new advances through the Internet. We have much more access to information and communication. Thus, we are advancing as human beings and becoming efficient. A website such as Wikipedia allows anyone at anytime to look up whatever they want. For example, they can find a random fact or even look up symptoms of some sort of sickness. This allows someone to advance to the next step without having to deal with anything in the middle. I think that this only proves that we are becoming a smarter and more efficient generation. It is ignorant to state that the Internet is making us dumb because an older form of communication is becoming obsolete.

Hey Ignacio!

I do agree that we are becoming more efficient nowadays and older forms of communication are becoming obsolete.

However, is it really better that face-to-face communication is diminishing? I mean, I'm sure you have to agree that you'd rather go on a date with someone in real life and look at them/speak to them rather than talk over the internet.

It's all about nonverbal cues!

Anyway, even though our information is readily available I do think that the internet is getting rid of vital aspects of human interaction.

See you!

Yes, it is surprising that we can advance to the next step without having to find out anything in the middle. I can say this is the attraction of the Internet. Are you agree with me? Also, I agree with Kim because nowadays we still using older form of communication.
